Matcha Shortage in Japan

Matcha Shortage in Japan

We are very sorry, but due to the recent shortage of high-grade ceremonial matcha in Japan, we are unsure as to how much we can make available in our store this year starting in June. Here is an excerpt from The Guardian about the current situation:

"Reports of a [matcha] shortage emerged last autumn, prompting tea companies in Kyoto to impose unprecedented purchase limits on the powder[...] Soaring demand in Europe, the US and Australia has prompted warnings of further shortages this year[...] This year’s tea harvest [...] will replenish the matcha supply [of last year], but relief will be temporary."

The shortage is due to the demand for Japanese matcha being higher than the supply. This has caused several tea shops and suppliers to limit purchases for customers. We are anticipating that we will also experience these limits.

The only information that we have as of right now about the availability of matcha in Japan is that the high-quality ceremonial matcha will be back on shelves sometime in June and that there is a possibility that we will only have a limited supply throughout the year.
